5 Nov 2024The third run of SSA’s Carbon Management Workshop, conducted by the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), and UN Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS) equipped members with practical strategies for carbon footprint management, supporting their sustainability journey.

Decarbonisation has been the hot topic in the industry and it is essential that the workforce is aware of carbon accounting principles and how they can help their companies progress towards the 2030 vision. On 5th November 2024, 17 participants attended the workshop that covered tools for calculating an organization’s carbon footprint and strategies to reduce emissions.

One such practical tool is the Carbon & Emissions Recording Tool (CERT) which enable businesses to measure and track carbon emissions and identify areas for operational savings. It also allows the company to assign a financial cost to carbon footprints.

Throughout the session, attendees gained hands-on experience with the CERT tool through case study discussions. They were then introduced to effective principles and practices for carbon emissions reduction in the maritime industry. By the end of the workshop, many felt energized and ready to contribute towards their company’s green efforts.

Pal Toh, Senior Manager of the Transhipment Department at Ocean Network Express (Singapore) Pte Ltd, shared that “the workshop offered a clear, actionable roadmap for achieving carbon management readiness. It was not only relevant and engaging but also skilfully blended classroom learning with hands-on fieldwork and real-world case studies, creating a comprehensive, practical experience. The facilitators highlighted the importance of seeing the bigger picture, showing how even small, daily actions can significantly contribute to environmental impact. This experience has genuinely inspired me to lead sustainability efforts within our office.”

This workshop is part of a broader, long-term commitment outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the MPA and GCNS, aimed at building and expanding carbon management capabilities across Singapore’s maritime sector.

Besides capability building activities such as this workshop, the MaritimeSG LowCarbon50 Awards recognizes the industry’s contributions to emissions reduction. Companies, especially those who have attended the carbon management workshops, are encouraged to apply for the awards and demonstrate use of carbon accounting tools such as CERT to explore carbon reporting and internal carbon pricing. Applications are open from 5 November 2024 to 18 February 2025, with awards will be presented during Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025.
