Home > All stories > Sharing Maritime HR Insights on Strategic Compensation and Meaningful Career Progression
26 Aug 2025The Connexions Forum, held on 13 August 2025 at PARKROYAL on Beach Road, was attended by over 130 HR practitioners from across the maritime industry

The event was co-organised with the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), supported by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and co-sponsored by Workforce Singapore (WSG).

In his opening remarks, SSA President Mr. T S Teo acknowledged HR practitioners as the “partners and enablers that drive new workforce capabilities”, contributing to not just their company’s success but also the success of Maritime Singapore.

Compensation is a critical lever in talent management. It is a strategic tool that, when managed effectively, becomes fundamental to overall business strategy for many maritime companies in this tight labour market. The first guest speaker, Mr. Mark Charman, Chief Executive Officer of Faststream Recruitment shared practical compensation insights and tools for attendees to consider refining their rewards strategies. One such tool is the Group’s Strategic Compensation Flow, a practical 3-part model to guide companies in better pay decisions.

With the maritime industry transforming in areas such as automation, digitalisation and decarbonisation, it is vital that leaders prepare their maritime workforce by equipping them with the necessary skills to perform jobs of the future. This is where workforce transformation enables businesses to strengthen their competitive edge.

In his presentation, Mr. Aloysius Ng, Senior Manager from WSG shared with attendees about the newly launched Career Health initiative, which helps companies chart out meaningful career development pathways for their workforce by equipping them with skills gap assessment tools and supporting them in their job redesign initiatives.

He urged attendees to utilise the available grant supports provided by the government, such as the Career Conversion Programme (CCP) Sea Transport, which can provide salary support for businesses that train new hires or re-skill their existing talent.

SSA is the programme partner for the CCP Sea Transport. For more information on the programme, get in touch with us at ccp@ssa.org.sg.

A special thank you to the co-sponsor of the event, Workforce Singapore.
