25 Nov 2025Over 100 C-suite leaders from the industry engage with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)'s senior leadership in candid discussions on decarbonisation, talent, and geopolitical risks

On 13 November 2025, Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) convened over 100 senior representatives from large shipping companies to small and medium enterprises for an exclusive dialogue with Mr. Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of the MPA and his leadership team. This high-level engagement provided a rare platform for a strategic discussion on the future of Maritime Singapore.

Industry Concerns for 2026

Ahead of the dialogue, SSA conducted a survey with its members to identify the most pressing challenges for the coming year. The top concerns were:

  • Decarbonisation policy and strategy
  • Rising operating costs in Singapore
  • Impact of geopolitics on the maritime industry
  • Talent retention and attraction

These priorities framed a robust conversation moderated by Dr. Sanjay C. Kuttan, CEO and Founder of Kai Gaia International Advisory.

Key Themes of the Dialogue

The dialogue featured in-depth exchanges on key areas that were on the top of many maritime C-suite’s minds. For one, the outcome of MEPC83 meeting in October 2025, which many viewed as “disappointing”.

Mr. Ang went on to reaffirm Singapore’s commitment to working with like-minded countries to chart pathways toward a global net-zero framework. He emphasised that the industry’s ongoing decarbonisation efforts remain vital and encouraged companies to continue investments in innovation and green technologies to reduce emissions today.

The topic of talent attraction and retention was also central to the dialogue. Mr. Ang highlighted MPA’s ongoing initiatives to draw both students and mid-career professionals to the maritime sector, so that companies can continue to grow their operations here. SAILMap, a tripartite training programme designed to encourage the local workforce to consider a long-term seafaring career was also highlighted. Notably, the SSA has been contributing towards this programme to ensure a sustained seafaring talent pipeline for our members.

Participants actively engaged with questions and brought up their concerns with MPA in an intimate setting. While it was apparent that the industry is currently facing disruptions on multiple fronts, the candour of the discussions demonstrated MPA’s commitment towards building a pro-business environment for our members to thrive.

SSA extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Ang for his candid insights and Dr. Sanjay for expertly moderating the session.

Year-End Cocktail

The evening concluded with a post-dialogue cocktail reception, attended by additional 274 guests. The networking event brought together a vibrant mix of industry professional for networking and knowledge exchange. SSA also welcomed 15 new members during the New Members Certificate Presentation, marking a strong finish to an impactful year.
