Home > All stories > Celebrating Gender Diversity on International Women’s Day 2025
30 Apr 2025The event saw female maritime professionals sharing their perspectives and experiences in their Maritime journey, and what it meant for future generations.

Organised by the SSA Young Executive Group (YEG), the event took place on 29 April 2025 at Rasa Space, Republic Plaza with over 140 attendees. The event was jointly organised with the Association of Singapore Maritime and Offshore Energy Industries (ASMI), Singapore Logistics Association of Singapore (SLA), Singapore Maritime Officers Union (SMOU), and The Nautical Institute (NI).

YEG Committee Chair Mr Prabjot Singh started the event by sharing how Singapore has moved forward in improving gender equality within our workforce, with more women taking leadership roles. He shared that in the 2024 United Nations Gender Inequality Index (GII), Singapore was ranked eighth worldwide and first in the Asia-Pacific region for having a low level of gender inequality. This is also reflected in our industry, where there was an increase in female representation in the Maritime industry. However, Mr Singh also stated that there is still a need for a shift in mindsets, and biases need to be challenged to make further progress.

Following his remarks, two panel discussions took place. Moderated by Capt. Hari Subramaniam, Honorary Chair of The Nautical Institute, speakers in the first session shared their thoughts on how mentorship and leadership play an important role in changing the younger generation’s perception of the shipping industry.

Inter-generational leadership, where generations seek to learn from each other strengths, was key.

The second session, moderated by Mr. Kenneth Lim, Assistant Chief Executive (Industry & Transformation) from Maritime and Port Authority in Singapore (MPA), spotlight the success and journey of female professionals from across the maritime ecosystem.

It was heartening to hear leaders share their personal anecdotes from their own journeys. It also reflected the diversity of roles in maritime, and that a successful career in Maritime can appear in many shapes and forms.

Ms Caroline Yang, President of SSA, urged participants to continue learning as they progressed in their career, and that “you define your success”.

The evening concluded with a robust networking session.
