Home > All stories > Singapore Shipping Association Statement on The Strait of Hormuz Situation
17 Apr 2026The Association supports dialogue and de-escalation efforts and reiterates the importance of maritime safety and stable trade flows for the global economy.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense and uncertain despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate. Disruptions to maritime operations persist, affecting vessels, cargo flows and critically, the safety and welfare of seafarers. Continued instability in this strategically important waterway carries significant risks for global supply chains, energy security, and the wider world economy.

The Singapore Shipping Association’s (SSA) primary concern is the safety and well‑being of seafarers and the preservation of freedom of navigation and transit passage as provided for under international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and established maritime conventions. Seafarers should not be placed at risk as a result of geopolitical developments beyond their control.

As the representative body of the Singapore shipping industry, SSA opposes any actions by any party that impede the lawful and safe passage of vessels or disrupt international shipping.

SSA supports dialogue and all efforts aimed at de-escalation, and reiterates the importance of safeguarding maritime safety, seafarer welfare, and freedom of navigation to maintain the stability and resilience of global trade.
