On 1st of March 2024, the SSA Young Executive Group (YEG) Community and Social Media sub-group organised a donation drive to support fishing vessels crew at Jurong Fishery Port. The event took place during the Lunar New Year period and over 15 YEG members and the Association’s Secretariat staff volunteered their time to pack festive “goodie bags” filled with new and close-to-new items. The items included shampoo, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, new clothes and shavers. They were distributed to 400 crew, who received them with great appreciation.
It was an excellent opportunity for our members to extend their generosity and show their appreciation to the seafarers who spend months at sea away from home, to bring us the bounties of the sea. We hope our small gesture and contributions have made an impact in enhancing the well-being of the crew members of fishing vessels.
Similar to last year, this event was planned in close partnership with the International Lutheran Seafarers’ Mission. Founded in 1999, the ILSM supports seafarers and fishermen by providing them with a listening ear, pastoral care as well as practical assistance, including clothing, food and hygiene products.
O’Hara Patricia Ann from Grindrod Shipping Pte. Ltd. reflected on her experience: “This event was significant as it provides essential support to seafarers, addressing their needs through donations and outreach efforts. Not only can we alleviate the challenges they face while at sea, but we can also foster a sense of community care and understanding. I enjoy the satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful cause, and the opportunity to learn more about the challenges faced by seafarers through this event.”
Mustika Wardani from ABL Energy & Marine Consultants Pte Ltd added on: “I believe we can have better impact in helping those fishery boat crew compared to the crew from well established companies. This event was very eye opening for me. I got to see the visible impact on the crew and how happy they were when they feel seen and heard.” Fadallan Ma Antonethe Dizon from Faststream Recruitment Pte Ltd also expressed: “This event plays a crucial role in showing appreciation for their hard work and sacrifices, fostering a sense of community and support within the maritime industry.”
We thank those who have contributed for their support and kindness.
