27 Mar 2025In an era of rapid digital transformation, cybersecurity has become a pressing concern for the maritime industry. To address the evolving landscape of cyber threats, the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) Digitalisation Committee, in collaboration with the International Maritime Cyber Security Organisation (IMCSO), hosted the Peril on the Digital Horizon: Tackling Cyber Threats in Maritime webinar on 18 March.

Strengthening Cyber Resilience in the Maritime Sector

The webinar featured an esteemed panel of industry experts who provided invaluable insights into the unique challenges posed by rapid technological evolution and the increasing cyber risks faced by maritime businesses.

The session was organised by  SSA’s Digitalisation Committee, and included speakers from leading maritime and cybersecurity organisations:

These experts shared their perspectives on the risks and vulnerabilities associated with digitalisation in maritime operations, as well as strategies to mitigate cyber threats effectively.

Addressing the Industry’s Cybersecurity Challenges

One of the key themes discussed was the increasing sophistication of cyber threats and the need for the maritime industry to adopt robust cybersecurity frameworks. The speakers highlighted the impact of rapid digitalisation the industry, stressing that cybersecurity must be a priority at every level of the maritime ecosystem.

The panel also explored risk management strategies and the growing attack surface at port level highlighting the need for enhanced security protocols across interconnected networks.

Looking Ahead: Building a Secure Digital Future

As maritime businesses continue to integrate advanced technologies such as automation, AI, and cloud-based solutions, the risk of cyber incidents will only grow.

To support companies in strengthening their cyber defences, SSA has introduced Singapore Cyber Index for Safe Shipping and Operational Readiness (SCISSOR) Index, a specialised cyber health self-assessment tooltailored for the maritime industry. Companies can determine their cybersecurity maturity level of their fleet operations as a first step towards getting cyber protected. More than 50 ship owning and operating companies with various fleet sizes have utilized this complimentary tool since its launch.
