As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to gain momentum across industries, many organisations are asking the same question: How do we move from identifying AI opportunities to implementing solutions that deliver measurable value?
To explore this challenge, the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) organised the AI Seminar: From Hype to Practical Value on 12 August 2026. It brought together 100 maritime professionals for an interactive case study lab focused on practical AI adoption and implementation.
Rather than discussing AI solely from a technology perspective, participants were guided through a real-world case study that examined the decisions, challenges and considerations involved in turning AI concepts into business outcomes.
Lessons from the Case Study Lab
A key objective of the session was to unpack AI adoption and provide participants with a realistic understanding of what it takes to successfully implement AI within an organisation.
Through the case study exercise, participants explored how businesses can identify opportunities for AI, align stakeholders around common goals and take a structured approach towards implementation.
Several common themes emerged from the discussion:
Start with the Business Problem
Successful AI initiatives begin with a business challenge rather than the technology itself. Organisations should focus on identifying problems where improvements can deliver clear and measurable operational or commercial impact. Starting with a well-defined business need helps teams prioritise the right AI solutions and allocate resources more effectively. Establishing measurable outcomes help align stakeholders, manage expectations and provide a framework for evaluating success.
Begin Small and Build Momentum
Rather than pursuing large-scale transformation from the outset, organisations can benefit from starting with focused proof-of-concept projects. The goal does not need to be AI-led from the start. In many cases, AI can be introduced as an enabler within existing business initiatives to enhance outcomes and improve efficiency. Early successes can help build confidence, demonstrate value and support broader adoption efforts.
Embrace Learning Through Experimentation
Innovation often involves uncertainty. Participants discussed the importance of cultivating a culture that supports experimentation. The concept of “failing forward” recognises that setbacks and course corrections are often part of the journey towards successful implementation.

The session featured insights from industry experts who shared their perspectives on AI adoption, digital transformation and emerging opportunities for the maritime sector.
