The presentations were followed by an interactive panel discussion moderated by Dr Akanksha Batura, Vice Chair of the SSA International Committee.

Reading the Market Signals

Ms Mitra highlighted how disruption has become a defining feature of today’s operating environment. She underscored the importance of understanding the interplay between trade flows, fuel markets and broader industry developments when assessing risks and opportunities.

Building on this, Mr Heng shared perspectives on the commercial outlook for shipping. He noted that the “name of the game” for shipping had changed in 2026. Market participants, he said, must look beyond traditional asset-cycle strategies. Furthermore, they should consider how market conditions and decarbonisation pressures are reshaping business decisions.

Charting the Energy Transition

Presenting DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook 2026, Dr Osman emphasised the need for flexible and resilient strategies as the industry navigates an uncertain transition pathway.

He also highlighted the value of energy-efficiency measures. Such measures can deliver tangible benefits regardless of future regulatory outcomes. With the International Maritime Organization continuing discussions on its Net-Zero Framework, Dr Osman stressed the importance of strategies that can perform across multiple regulatory scenarios.

During the panel discussion, the panellists emphasised the importance of staying agile amid continued market uncertainty. While challenges remain, it was noted that banks continue to support green-fuel projects, with established frameworks in place to assess emerging opportunities.

The panellists also urged businesses to closely monitor evolving fuel economics and market signals to make informed decisions.

The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment. Participants exchanged views with the speakers on market developments, fuel strategies and the industry’s evolving regulatory landscape. SSA thanks the speakers and moderator for sharing their expertise. Their valuable insights helped participants better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the global shipping industry.
