Every year, the SSA council would help to identify students undertaking undergraduate studies in a range of disciplines that are set to be in-demand skills as Maritime Singapore transforms. This year, we awarded scholarships worth $162,000 to 5 students currently studying for their Bachelors in Maritime Business. Upon graduation, they will have to work in the shipping industry for 2-3 years.
This year, 39 sponsoring organisations from diverse sectors including that of SSA contributed to the scholarships, reflecting Maritime Singapore’s collective commitment to nurturing future talent.
The maritime community convened at Conrad Centennial Singapore on 6th September 2024 to witness the MaritimeONE Scholarship and Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) Awards Ceremony, whereby a total of 63 MaritimeONE Scholarships and 10 Tripartite Maritime Scholarships were granted to deserving students. As one of the 39 sponsoring organizations, SSA is happy to support these scholarship recipients studying disciplines ranging from maritime studies to data science and business analytics. This diversity highlights the dynamic transformation of Singapore’s maritime ecosystem towards more digital and sustainable practices. The TMSS recipients, supported by major industry partners, are set to pursue careers as ship captains and marine engineers.
Ms Caroline Yang, President of SSA said, “At the Singapore Shipping Association, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of maritime talent. By investing in scholarships and education, we ensure that our industry remains resilient and innovative.”
Celebrating Maritime Scholarship Recipients
This year, SSA proudly presented the MaritimeONE scholarships to University of Plymouth Maritime Business undergraduates Tang Chi Lim, Mikhail Bin Azhari, Issac Lin, Tinsel Wong, and Ling Wai Kin.
Tinsel Wong, who received the MaritimeONE Scholarship, reflected on her journey, saying, “It has been an incredible honour and a pivotal milestone in my education, providing me countless opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.” Another scholarship recipient, Mikhail Azhari, adds, “I am deeply honoured and grateful for the opportunities this award has afforded me. It not only validates my commitment to the maritime industry but also empowers me to pursue my academic and career aspirations with greater confidence.”
Their passion for maritime studies is deeply rooted in their family legacies. Tinsel shares, “My interest in maritime studies stems from my father, a former ship captain and now a senior operations manager, whose dedication has always inspired me.” Mikhail similarly draws inspiration from his father’s experiences: “His stories of meeting people around the globe, managing ships, and encountering diverse cultures ignited a profound passion within me, leading me to enrol in the BSc (Hons) Maritime Business programme at the University of Plymouth.”
Tinsel firmly believes in the potential of Singapore’s maritime professionals, stating, “Despite Singapore’s size, I am confident that our maritime experts can position this Little Red Dot as a strong and efficient global maritime hub.” The future of maritime Singapore looks promising, driven by the passion and commitment of its emerging talent.
